Run Month Reflection – Revitalise, Recycle and Reward.5 min read

In October this year we hosted our first ever ‘Run Month’ which saw a variety of trade experts in-store as well as exciting events and our recycling initiative – for everyone that recycled an old pair of trainers with us we thanked them with 20% off a brand new pair. We really wanted to thank everyone who was involved in Coes Run Month 2019,  and thought we would share a few details on the success of the event and what actually happened to the hundreds of recycled trainers.

Run Month 2019

Fitness and wellbeing are important to us here at Coes, which is clear in-store with our large sports department at Ipswich.  Over the past two years our focus on running and the local community have grown with both the expansion of our team of running experts in-store as well as our running group, created in 2017, Rushmere Community Runners. This friendly and supportive running group meets twice a week in the Ipswich School Sports Centre. We also work with the Suffolk County Council initiative ‘Outreach’ which helps us to promote fitness and support the local community. So, amid the success of our other running initiatives and with the sponsorship of Brooks Running we decided to host a ‘Run Month’.

In planning our “Run Month” we wanted to focus on two things: the promotion of fitness and wellbeing as well as wanting to find a way to include recycling and promote greener living. Various experts came to visit us in-store from a variety of companies that cover all aspects of running. We also enjoyed seeing 50k silver medallist runner and Coes ambassador Helen Davies, our sponsor Brooks Running and, of course, our very own RCR (Rushmere Community Runners). The full list of everyone that was involved can be found below. We were delighted to see so many people in-store engaging in great conversations with our trade experts. This event also gave us the opportunity to contact all the running clubs and other organisations, such as the Army and the police within a 50-mile radius of our Ipswich store. It was great to speak to people as passionate as us when it comes to running.

We were also able to invite you all to our ‘Bras & Bubbles’ evening event hosted by Victoria from Brooks. At this sports bra event you could enjoy a complimentary glass of bubbles whilst talking to experts and getting fitted to find the perfect sports bra for you.  We would like to thank Victoria for hosting and for everyone who came along and made the evening so special.

On top of these amazing events we had our in-store recycling initiative throughout the whole of Run Month. You could bring in your old trainers for us to recycle and as a thank you for using the service you would get 20% off a brand-new pair of running shoes. At the end of the month hundreds of trainers had been recycled; and we would really like to thank our customers for taking part in recycling their shoes and helping us to do our bit for the environment.

So, what happened to your trainers next?

We teamed up with specialist recycling company, SOEX, to provide a recycling service for the old trainers that were brought in. In the UK, over 300 million pairs of shoes go to landfill each year. SOEX offers an alternative – to reuse and recycle the whole shoe to uphold their philosophy of ‘zero waste’ as much as they can. SOEX sells a portion of the goods to the rag industry. An additional portion is shredded and turned into secondary raw materials at their in-house recycling plant. SOEX works at great lengths to get the most out of the materials they recycle and have even considered the dust that accumulates when producing the recycled material, which they press into briquettes for use within the cardboard industry. This means 100% – that’s every single part – of the trainers you brought into us during Run Month were recycled.

Once again, Coes would like to thank you all for coming along to our Run Month event and to the hundreds of you that recycled your trainers! If you missed the opportunity to be a part of our Run Month do not worry, we are looking at hosting another one next year.
