Sometimes it can be hard to know what to choose to make sure you’re well prepared for what the slopes might throw at you. But, don’t worry, our ski experts have compiled this handy guide to help you pack the essentials…

The foundation to any warmth system is to ensure that you have several thinner layers, rather than one thick layer. This will allow you to optimise your body temperature by adding or removing layers. A three layer system is recommended; however, depending on the individual, location and time of year you are going, you may find more or less is required.

The following, in our opinion, are essential items required for a successful ski trip.   

Thermal base layers (first layer): Synthetic materials offer the best performance in active sports as these keep you warm and wick away the most moisture. Thermals with anti-bacterial properties are a nice optional extra as these do not hold any nasty odours.

Mid layers (second layer): Micro fleeces provide warmth at a lighter weight with moisture wicking properties. Sweatshirts, hoodies and knitted tops are also good mid layers. 

Jacket & Trousers (third layer): Good wind and water resistance along with insulation is essential. However full water and wind proofing is beneficial especially for beginners who could spend a lot of time in the snow. A snow skirt in the jacket not only stops snow from getting in but also stops warmth from escaping.

Gloves & Mittens: Essential to keep your hands warm and dry, mittens offer a higher degree of warmth; however, more people opt for gloves as they are more practical.

– Socks: Calf length socks with high wool content along with synthetic fibres will provide warmth and moisture wicking, giving optimal comfort. Three pairs is the minimum we recommend to take as this will allow time to wash and dry them if need be. Technical socks are not essential; however, these provide extra padding where needed most for extra comfort.

Goggles: These are essential to protect your eyes from the elements. Ensure that these are anti-fog and if possible choose a double lens goggle as this will increase protection and provides a better anti-fog system. Ensure you choose the appropriate lens for the conditions you will most likely be in (ask our highly trained staff for advice on what will be best for you).

Sunscreen & Lip salve: Both sun and wind can cause burns at high altitude so protection is important: a high SPF level will give you the most protection from the elements. Most people opt for a combi pack as this is the most economical and handy way to purchase sunscreen and lip salve.

Helmet: It is compulsory in most countries for younger skiers to wear helmets. These are often included in the price of the school trip. However, some people prefer to purchases their own helmet for hygienic and safety reasons.


Whilst not essential, the following items can make the trip more comfortable.

Buff multifunction headwear: These can be worn in a multitude of ways allowing one piece of kit to provide warmth to your head, face and neck. It is also small enough to be folded up in a pocket when not needed (ask our staff for demonstrations).

– Beanie Hats: A lot of heat is lost though the head, so having a hat to put on while you are not skiing is important.

– Sunglasses: Though I would not recommend skiing in sunglasses, this is a less expensive way to protect your eyes from the changing light conditions.

 – Glove & Sock Liners: An optional layer for those who suffer from cold hands and or feet.

– Après Ski Boots: Optional, but great for walking around the resort after you take your ski boots off.

– Ski Ties: An inexpensive item that is used to hold skis together when storing and carrying them. There is also space to put a name to make sure to pick up the right skis.

Rucksack or waist bag: Great to store extra layers of clothing, drinks, snacks and any other items you wish to take on the slopes with you.
